Are you waiting for God to do something? Perhaps you have a promise from God, and now you are just biding your time until He actually fulfills it? I’ve talked with a number of people over the years who have expressed this kind of thought to me. They know that God is dependable, and they may even know that He has promised something to them – now they are just waiting for Him to actually follow-through and do it.
Perhaps that sounds familiar, or even describes what you are experiencing right now… however I want to share with you a different perspective; that as the title of this study suggests one word from God is enough. And as we explore this today, you will be able to move from “waiting for God” to truly “receiving from Him”, what has already been given to you.
As we begin today, let’s take an honest and completely open look about what was stated in the opening, that one word from God is enough. Most people are waiting for God to fulfill what He has said, or what He has promised. I want to look at this first because this is really the crux of the issue. You see, we tend to separate words from actions. We as humans say that we are going to do something, and then we either follow-through and do it – or sometimes we don’t. That is typically what we are used to, and we oftentimes project this same kind of functionality on God as well; we expect Him to operate the same way. However I want to invite you to enlarge your perspective of God and of the power of His words. Consider Psalms 33:6-9:
“By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea together as an heap: he lays up the depth in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he spoke, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.”
What we see in these verses are some amazing details about the words which God speaks. The Hebrew word דְבַ֣ר used in verse 6, denotes actual spoken words, things that are said vocally; but we see that unlike our human words, which generally require follow-up actions, we see that God’s words are different. It is the דברים, the spoken words of God that created the heavens and the earth. His spoken words literally formed physical matter, and the things which we consider to be “real” and tangible. These things were made by the spoken words of God.
And furthermore, take a look at verse 9, because the statement in the verse should really open our eyes to the power of the spoken words of God: For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
Unlike us, where our words generally require actions to back them up, God’s words are actions in-and-of-themselves! His very act of speaking was a creative action that formed existence itself and all of the things in this world (including us)! He spoke and it was done.
This is a very important fact to see because it will open the door for us to get out of the “waiting for God to do something” box. We are not waiting for Him to take action – He has already taken action by speaking. And as we have just see, His words have creative power – even to create and change and form matter. Stop and meditate on that for a bit, and you will begin to have your perspective opened to the wondrous and miraculous possibilities from simply having a spoken word from God to you.
So now that we know the sheer awesome power of God’s spoken words, it now would benefit us to know if He has actually spoken to us. Because if we actually have a word spoken to us from God, we should know about it, and receive all of what is given to us!
Take a look at Hebrews 1:1-3:
“God, who at assorted times and in divers manners spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
has in these last days spoken to us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
Now this is very specific. God, at various times and in different ways spoke in times past to the ancient fathers by the prophets. He did do that, and much of that is recorded in the Tanakh, the writings of Moses and the Old Covenant in general. We see plenty of examples of God speaking to ancient men and leaders and kings through Old Covenant prophets.
However, that is not how God has spoken to us. Not that those older writings don’t matter or have no purpose – but verse 2 here is specifically focusing our attention on the most important thing; a direct word from God specifically to us. And how has God spoken to us? By His Son. God has spoken to us by Jesus Christ. If today you are looking for a word for God – stop looking – the word has already been given, it came by the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
The verses then continue to paint a very specific, very detailed picture of exactly what this word is regarding. First, confirming that Jesus is the Word of God, which was made flesh (John 1:1-2), and that He is the heir of all things – meaning all things belong to Him, hence all things are under His power and command (this is good news for us).
We see that Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory. Which has a dual meaning. It means that He both shines with the Glory of God, and that He is the revealing light of the Glory of God – apart from Jesus, no glory of God can be seen, because He is the brightness of it.
We also see that Jesus is the express image of His person. Plainly meaning exactly what Jesus said about Himself in John 14:7-9, if you see Jesus, you have seen the Father also. Jesus is the absolute image, in character, in manner, in word, in deed, and in nature of God, even the Father. So again, if you want to know God’s will regarding anything, simply look at Jesus and you will have your answer.
And what then is His ultimate will for us? Look at the rest of the verse: He upholds all things by the word of His power (that includes us) – which is ultimately demonstrated by what He accomplished in our place on the cross.
Notice that the verse makes it absolutely clear… when He had by Himself purged our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
This leaves no room for doubt. Jesus has completely purged our sins (not merely covered them) but purged them away for all time. And He did this by Himself. This required no help from us – no added strength on our part. This was an act done by Jesus Christ alone, for us.
So then in the light of all of this – with the glory of the finished work of Christ at the center stage of our mind, what then is God’s spoken word to us today? John 19:30, tells us the answer:
“When he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
That is the ultimate spoken word of Jesus to you today. The one word that will move every mountain in your life. The one word that has divine creative power and the ability to shape and change your entire reality.
The punishment for sin and all of the curse has been paid in full. Jesus paid it in your place and you do not have to suffer when one has already suffered for you.
Receive this word from God to you, and receive your freedom and new identity in Christ.
Be blessed.
