Do you need a miracle today? Would you like to see more miracles in your life? Whether it’s physical, emotional, financial or spiritual, there is a single channel and avenue by which miracles come: faith. Faith is the key that unlocks the power of God in your life. And ironically it is largely ignored in favor of trying to obtain miracles by performance and works.
So today we are going to have a discussion regarding faith and miracles. Because miracles can still very much happen, and the scriptures tell us how. So let’s get started!
Of all the things in the scriptures, very few things fire the imagination more than miracles. Acts of divine power that accomplish supernatural results, such as healing or provision. There are some today who say that such miracles no longer happen today, but I do not see that in scripture; in-fact I see the exact opposite.
Consider that the Holy Spirit is still just as present as when He was first given in Acts. And the salvation and transforming of a human soul is in itself a miraculous event. We can therefore already see that miracles occur every single day. In my own life I’ve seen plenty, and had some happen directly to me.
The Spirit, Faith and Miracles
Now I completely understand that personal experience can be very subjective, and so let’s bypass all of that and see what the scriptures say on the subject. Let’s read Galatians 3:5 to start:
“He therefore that ministers to you the Spirit, and works miracles among you, does he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?”
This is a very interesting verse of scripture, because it highlights something for us to see regarding miracles. Namely, that they happen through the Spirit of God, and also that miracles occur by the hearing of faith.
That too, is intriguing, because the hearing of faith is not something that typically gets discussed. We typically think of faith as something that we need to conjure up, or muster within ourselves. So even the phrase “hearing of faith” may not even make sense to us. However as we have studied in the past, faith is not some mystical force, nor is it some kind of “belief will-power”. Simply put, faith is information – but not just any information. Faith is information about God, what He has done, and your new identity in Him. We see numerous examples of this kind of faith in Hebrews chapter 11, and this is why that chapter starts the way that it does, in verses 1 and 2:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it the elders obtained a good report.”
Take notice of this, because it is what most Christians call the definition of faith, but it is not the complete definition.
In truth, the entire chapter of Hebrews 11 is the definition of faith, along with examples, as mentioned previously. I invite you to check out our detailed study on faith if you want more details on what faith is.
Returning to our first verse of Galatians 3:5, we can see that is is this hearing of faith, that is the channel by which miracles happen. The hearing of this information about God, about His finished work, and our new identity in Christ. And that word “hearing” is very important there. It does not necessarily mean what we assume that it means. There are plenty of people that hear faith in the basic sense, but it doesn’t stick. However I want to share something very interesting about how the same Greek word ἀκοή (akoē) is first used in scripture, found in Matthew 4:24. Let’s take a look:
“And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought to him all sick people that were taken with diverse diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.”
The word translated as fame there is the same Greek word ἀκοή. And the interesting point to see here is that the people were not merely hearing the faith of Jesus, but they were taking it to heart. They were absorbing it and responding to it.
We can see in the verse that when the people heard the faith, when they heard the information about Jesus, they didn’t just brush it off. Instead, they brought their sick to Him to be healed. They responded to the faith. This is what it means to “hear the faith”.
Today, Jesus Comes to You
Back in biblical times when Jesus walked the earth, people had to go to Him. They either had to travel to Him, or wait for Him to come to their city or town. Today however, He comes to each of us personally, not bound by space or time. Take a look at John 14:22-23:
“Judas said to him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?
Jesus answered and said to him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our residence with him.”
When reading John chapter 14, you may be surprised how often these two verses get skipped-over – it’s ironic considering what we are discussing today. Let’s take some time to consider what Jesus is saying here, and how He answers the question.
When asked how Jesus will manifest Himself to us, He responds by saying If a man love me, he will keep my words. Some people misinterpret this as “obey the Old Covenant Law”, or some other forms of commandment-keeping and self-performance. However the Greek phrase does not support that interpretation. Rather, to keep (or guard) Jesus’ words means exactly what it sounds like, to absorb and respond to the information of Jesus Christ in the same way as we have seen with our earlier scripture verses in this study. To guard the information of Christ against all of the negative reports that come against it.
As we do this, we can see that Jesus (in union with the Father and Spirit) will come to us. Only now, it happens personally. And not only will God come to us, but we can see that He will make residence with us. This is unlike anything ever encountered in the Old Covenant. This is something only possible through Jesus Christ. And this is where our miracles happen. This is the avenue by which that power comes. This is not a temporary coming for a short visit, but a permanent dwelling place. This is our security and safety.
Conclusion, Standing in Faith
As reborn new creations in Christ, we are not meant to bow to every negative thing that comes our way. We have promises given to us by God. We have the Armor of God which we are to stand in. We are not powerless or helpless in this life, but we are to be strong in Christ, knowing who we are and what we have.
Today He is in us; His Spirit of power indwelling is. His Spirit is not a weak spirit, not a spirit of timidity or helplessness, but a Spirit of power, love and a sound mind (1st Timothy 1:7)
Rather than rolling over to every deception, trick or attack of the enemy, we are to stand in faith. Resist the enemy, and he will flee from you (James 4:7). And as the enemy flees in defeat, miracles happen. Jesus made this point in Matthew 12:28-29.
So I encourage you today, that in Christ with His Spirit, you have miracle working power inside of you right now. So stop waiting, and start rejoicing in Jesus Christ. His faith is the key to your miracle.
Be blessed.
