Do you want to operate in the divine power of God?
Do you want to live a life that is immersed in the blessings and abundance of Christ?
Many Christians would answer “yes” to these questions, and then they would tell you that these are things that they are earnestly striving for and working towards.
This isn’t really surprising, as the common Christian idea is that the miracles and blessings of God are only attainable through, either sacrifice, or struggle; long hours of fasting or praying – or even just winning the “spiritual lottery” of being chosen by God for a special calling.
This is what many people are taught, and this is what they believe.
However, what I want to share with you today, is something different… a different idea and perspective – one based on the life of Jesus, and founded on His New Covenant.
And what we will see, as the title of today’s study suggests, is that a divinely empowered life is not something out of reach, or only for a privileged few, but it’s much more simple than you might expect.
Stick with me here, and you will find that there is one simple secret for amazing miracles.
Alright, now you might already be skeptical, you might think that I am making some grandiose claim or a promise that I can’t keep with the title of today’s study – and if you’re thinking that right now I can certainly understand. The good news though is that this is not some promise that I have just made up, but it is in-fact a promise and a truth directly from Jesus to you.
You see, Jesus did not just leave us weak and vulnerable on the earth while He sits at the right-hand of the Father up in Heaven; but He has actually given us great authority to speak and act on His behalf. Verses such as John 14:12-14 make this very clear:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father.
And whatever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”
I invite you to look at these verses plainly for what they are saying. Jesus begins by saying Truly, truly, which is a phrase that He often used when He knew that what He was about to say would be doubted. And here He says something which is amazing!
He that believes on me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these.
Now stop here for a moment, and honestly consider these words of Jesus, because they are incredible words!
Jesus plainly says here that Whoever believes on Him (which is different than believing in Him), will do the same works that He does, and even greater works!
This means the same miracles; operating in the same divine authority; having (and sharing) the same divine peace! My friend, are you seeing how amazing this is? And the only qualification for all of this awesomeness, is believing on Him!
Now, why is this possible? Why exactly are we able to do the same works as Jesus, and even greater works than what He demonstrated on the earth? Jesus tells us at the end of the verse:
Because I go to my Father.
This signifies a couple of things… first, that when Jesus goes to His Father, His work will have been completed, the New Covenant would be in effect, the Way will have been opened for us to be reborn into Christ.
And second, Jesus going to His Father, means that He would send the Holy Spirit, which is why Jesus says in John 16:7-8 that it is actually beneficial for us that He goes away, because when He goes, He will send the Holy Spirit to us. And this is one of the pillars of the simple secret for miracles: what the completed work of Christ means for us.
Then in verses 13 and 14 here, Jesus says something that we studied several weeks ago in our previous series on Healing, and something many believers still do not believe: that we can ask anything in the Name of Jesus, and He will do it! Again, this is all based upon the foundation of the finished work of Christ; His New Covenant, and your new identity in Him. He even repeats His statement twice back-to-back because He wants us to be sure of this truth, and yet He knew that so many people would have difficulty believing it.
You see, Jesus in simple terms, has granted us the authority to act on His behalf. And that includes His authority for miracles as well. Take for example, Mark 16:15-19:
“And he said to them, Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken to them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.”
Again, take a step back and look at what this is saying, apart from typical church ideas and dogma, and you will see the amazing truth of what Jesus is declaring here, and what He is actually doing.
Notice that He says: Go into all the world and preach the Gospel. This is a direct charge, one that carries authority with it as we will see in a moment.
Verse 16 tells us the two possible outcomes, based on the choice of the recipient of the message… they will either believe and be baptized (immersed) into Christ, or they will choose to not believe, resulting in damnation – this is never the will of God for any person by the way, as mentioned in 1st Timothy 2:4 – God desires all men to be saved, but it is ultimately their choice to believe the Gospel or not.
Then in verses 17 and 18 we see something very interesting… verse 17 begins with the words: And these signs shall follow them that believe.
Now stop for a moment and consider this. What follows is a list of some of the things that shall accompany believers in Christ and in His Gospel; however typical church theology often relegates these signs off to only the eleven disciples of that time period. But why?
Notice that the verse does not actually place such a condition on the signs, but rather the verse says in no uncertain terms that these signs shall follow them that believe!
The only condition here is that a person believes on Christ and His Gospel. To place any other stipulation or condition here would be to actually add to what Jesus said.
And finally in verse 19, we see that after Jesus spoke these marvelous words, He was received up into Heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father. This is like a divine exclamation-mark on His final statements. And it’s also a reassurance for anyone who believes in the Gospel, including us, because it shows us that indeed, Jesus has finished His redemptive work and all of our sins have indeed been removed, as mentioned in Hebrews 10:10-14.
This really is the point of it all, my friend.
The one simple secret for amazing miracles, is to fully embrace and “own” the finished work of Christ for you, and your new identity in Him. That is, a new identity of absolute righteousness – the very righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, according to 2nd Corinthians 5:21.
The identity of absolute holiness, and completeness, as mentioned in Hebrews 10:10 and Colossians 2:9-10.
The identity of a truly blessed and beloved son of God, as mentioned in 1st John 4:4 and Romans 8:15.
The perfect example of this is Jesus Himself.
John 13:3 records that Jesus knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God.
And furthermore, prior to Him performing His first miracle of turning water into wine, Jesus had a revelation, a revealing, of the Father’s love for Him, as recorded in Matthew 3:16.17.
The same is also true for us today. Once we realize that we are born of God, reborn into Christ, and that we are dearly beloved of our Father in Heaven, we will be able to take our rightful place in His Kingdom and in His Family, and will operate in our God-given authority.
I encourage you today, my friend, to receive this truth, and step into your rightful place. Own your identity in Christ, and be who you were always intended to be: a dearly beloved child of God – and a king and priest in His Kingdom.
Be blessed.
