Did you know that you have the same power of creation that God does? Yes the very same power to call forth things into existence that God has is also in you. There are those who simply do not believe it, and there are also those who have never been told, but the Bible and even Jesus Christ Himself when He was walking on earth was very clear on this subject.
Since it is so vitally important to understand this power, it is what we will be studying today.
Now be forewarned that I am going to be using another example from gaming because I was recently reminded of this while playing an on-line game. However even if you are not into video or computer games the example will still make sense to you, so this is not an excuse to go to sleep!
As it was, I was playing a team-based game, and things just weren’t going my way at all. I was being beat pretty badly, and I started to feel the same feeling you get when you are watching a 8-0 Baseball game… that it is hopeless, and my words began to reflect that fact. Things like “I’m so stupid for falling for that trap!”, “Wow I’m so outclassed.”, began to flow out of me every time the other side scored on me. And the more I spoke, the worse things went.
With about fifteen minutes left in the match, something clicked on the inside and I stopped to remind myself that these things I was feeling and speaking were actually not true at all and that the Bible paints a much different picture of what’s true. I began to speak the truth of the Bible instead of what I was feeling or even seeing. That I am blessed in every way, that everything, everything, that I do prospers, that I was always produce good results and that all infirmities are destroyed in my life. And you know, the more I spoke those things, paying no attention to what I saw or felt, the better things went, and I began to go on a scoring streak, and our team actually ended up winning that match by more than a thirty point spread!
That may surprise some of you, but it really shouldn’t based on what the Bible says. Let’s take a look at Proverbs 18:20-21:
“A man’s belly will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips will he be filled.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it will eat the fruit thereof.”
This makes it very clear, that put simply we will receive whatever we say, even including the very forces of life and death.
Now here are some who say that this means that they can simply say whatever they want and it will just happen, and so they dismiss this verse as untrue. Often they will claim that they can simply say something like “I have 1 Billion Dollars” and then claim the verse is not true if they do not receive what they have said. But do you see the second part of verse 21? They that love it shall eat the fruit thereof! The phrase there actually means “to like, or befriend”. See there are people who speak without thinking, or just to get a word in, and these people are using their power without caution and it tends to cause harm to themselves and others.
Yet let us answer the question of the “1 Billion Dollars”, for this we look in Proverbs 10:20:
“The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.”
The word “just” there is actually translated in the original Hebrew as “Righteous”. So we see that mere positive confession alone is not enough, but there must be a proper foundation of righteousness– righteousness that can only be found in Christ Jesus.
Jesus Himself also makes this clear in John 15:7:
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask what you will, and it will be done to you.”
You see my friends, God is not against us having blessings, not even wealth… for the Bible is filled with men being blessed and made very rich for no other reason then the blessings of God were upon them. However they all had one thing in common: they were all righteous by faith! They all allowed the righteousness of grace to purify them and so they had a right foundation upon which they could be blessed.
Once this is done, then the unlimited blessings of God are indeed opened upon us just as the scriptures and Jesus has said. Yet just like in my opening example of the game; we often-times do not tame our tongue and give our words the proper respect and consideration that they deserve seeing that the very powers of life and death are within our words. Remember that we can bless or curse anything without ever using the specific words “bless” or “curse”.
So today my friends, if you find that you are in need of a tongue change, start looking to the words of Christ, see the power and authority He has given you and how you are made completely righteous by His completed work, and start speaking those things just as I did in my game. Remember as Proverbs 4:22 makes clear, the words of Christ are life to those that find them and health unto all their flesh.
