Like many, I have a fondness for Lego bricks and toys. I love the idea of starting from scratch and creating something unique. Some of the things that people have managed to create using nothing more than Lego blocks is truly amazing.

Yet when I was five years old and received my first Lego set, I really had no idea how to create anything other than simple square structures (and sometimes not even that!).

Thankfully my set came with a book that gave some examples of some more complex shapes and things that could be created, and included step-by-step instructions which were easy to follow.

Now of course as my experience with Lego grew I was able to
more easily create some pretty cool (to a five year old) things using my little set. However the point I really want to make is that the first time I saw that pile of bricks on the floor I had no idea where to begin or how to proceed; and our spiritual life is also much like this.

We begin with God by giving our life to Him, but still try to solve our problems ourselves and still attempt to forge our own paths even though we really have no idea what to do our how to proceed onward. Much like as in my childhood with my Lego set I have had to return to the “manual” and to realize and admit to the Lord that my life is a disassembled mess much as those Lego bricks were.

Now here is the problem which I and many that I know get into… as we get older and “wiser” and as we gain more experience, we think that we no longer need to consult the Lord on which direction to take or what we should do next.

I thought those things I created with my Lego set were the absolute best things in existence, and indeed they were pretty nifty… but they were nothing compared to some of the things that are on display.  Like-wise, we may think that our own plans are absolutely the best things for us, but they are nothing compared to the plans that God has for us if we submit to His will instead of trying to go our own way.

The Lord has wonderful things for us if we take the time to fully surrender ourselves to Him and stop using our own power and our own limited understanding of whatever situation we may be in. Consider Isaiah 55:8-9:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Since we know that the thoughts and ways of God are far superior to ours, we can safely assume that His plans for us are equally superior to our plans.

We must fully surrender ourselves and all of our plans and selves
to Him then He an work His will through us fully and when He can fully work His will through us than His power can flow freely without being hindered by our human desires and will.

For remember that it is not about our wills and desires but about His great plans and purposes that we are here. We are not put on this earth to satisfy ourselves but to do His work. All the more reason we should stay connected to Him every day.

  1. What a great post! It is so difficult for we humans to let go, and let God! We think we can do better somehow. We indeed are sheep!!
